Trooper reprimanded for taking pic with Snoop Dogg at SXSW

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A Department of Public Safety trooper is in trouble for posing in a photo with a famous rapper at South By Southwest and this isn’t an April Fool’s Joke.

Trooper Billy Spears from Gilmer, Texas, took a picture with rapper Snoop Dogg two weeks ago. DPS officials saw the photo on Instagram and cited Spears for taking a photo with a public figure who has a known drug background. Spears’ attorney said the complaint originated with Lt. Col. David Baker, the assistant DPS director.

“The public figure posted the photo on social media and it reflects poorly on the Agency,” according to a report filed in Spears’ official record.

“DPS has no policy requiring a criminal background check on everyone who requests a picture with a uniformed trooper,” said attorney Ty Clevenger. “In fact, DPS has no policy forbidding a photograph with someone who has a criminal conviction.”

Spears will now have to undergo counseling, according to Clevenger. A DPS spokesperson said “supervisors counsel and coach employees on a regular basis, and these efforts do not constitute formal discipline by the department.”

Clevenger is asking the director of the DPS to remove the reprimand.
