CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – You’ll have to change how you drive in the rain starting next week. The “wipers on, headlights on” law takes effect April 7th.
You’ll be required to put your headlights on when you have your windshield wipers on. No matter if its day or night, you will need to put your full headlights on, not just the lamp lights on the front and back of your car.
If you don’t, you can get pulled over and ticketed. It’s considered a minor surchargeable traffic violation, which means you could pay more for insurance.
Bill Trudeau told 22News “If you did get a ticket for it, it’s going to be among the things that the merit rating board could cause a surcharge on your driving record in Massachusetts and if you have a surcharge, it’s something that can lead to your insurance costs being higher than they would be without it.”
This will be required in any bad weather or any time where you can’t see people or cars 500 feet away from you. The law also says you’ll need headlights on 30 minutes before sunset and sunrise.
