Officer saves man from burning car

(CNN) – The accident happened in East Providence but it was a Cranston police officer who was in the right place at the right time and was able to pull the driver from his burning SUV.

Officer Brenton Medeiros works for the Cranston police department, but his job to protect and serve stretched far beyond his shift. The flames shooting out of this range rover caught Medeiros’ attention while he was driving to work on I-195 in East Providence. He pulled over to call 911, “I saw that there was someone in the car so I just stuffed by phone in my pocket and somehow found my way over the fence, I don’t know how I got over the fence but I just pulled him out of the car,” said officer Medeiros.  “I didn’t really think I going to go save this guy’s life I just saw him in there I just went out and grabbed him so I mean I guess it was instinct, yeah.”

NBC 10 discovered the driver inside as 70 year old Richard bready.  He’s considered one of the richest men in Rhode Island. Bready is the former CEO of Nortek and on the board of trustees at roger Williams University.

He hosted a fundraiser for president Obama at his Newport mansion.  Bready’s home on the east side of providence was broken into last year and back in 2008. As Medeiros spoke to NBC 10 he remained very humble and happy to help a complete stranger, “I don’t consider myself as a hero I was in the right place at the right time. Anyone else I worked with would have done it, they would have stopped too.”
