BOSTON (WWLP) – Indoor tanning beds are a popular option for people who want a bronze complexion in the wintertime, but over time there could be some serious consequences. The American Cancer Society estimated 74,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year and the disease is expected to kill nearly 10,000 people.
The American Cancer Society made their pitch to state lawmakers for a bill banning minors from using indoor tanning beds. Under state law, a person under the age of 14 can use a tanning bed only if a parent or guardian is present. Those between 14 and 17 years old will need parental consent.
West Springfield Democrat Jim Welch believes there should be stronger restrictions for minors.
“Kids are using them at a young age… I think at the very least maybe parental consent needs to be improved,” said Welch.
The bill would also ban minors under the age of 18 from working in a tanning salon.
