WMass husband and wife donating $1M to Sister Caritas Cancer Center

26,000 square foot expansion expected to be completed by the fall

Sister Mary Caritas announces a $1M gift from Bill and Cindy Lyons of Wilbraham to the expansion of the Sister Caritas Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Wilbraham couple has made a $1 million donation to Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, as the hospital continues its expansion of the Sister Caritas Cancer Center.

Officials from Mercy Medical Center announced the gift by Cindy and Bill Lyons Monday morning. Their donation will go a long way toward completing the $15 million project, which will add 26,000 square feet to the existing center on their Carew Street campus. The hospital anticipates that the demand for cancer services will continue to grow in the coming years, with a 26% increase in need for outpatient services by 2022.

“This is really going to help us bring everything together to one comprehensive place for our patients, give them a better experience, more privacy. We want to make a calm and healing environment and this is going to allow us to do that,” said Daniel Moen, President of Sisters of Providence Health System.

Hospital officials are calling this a “Challenge Gift,” hoping that the Lyons’ donation will encourage other members of the community to give.

The expanded Sister Caritas Cancer Center has been delayed due to the harsh winter, but is expected to be open by this fall.
