Victim of deadly Springfield crash identified

Speed, poor weather, bald tires believed to have led to accident

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A combination of speed, worn-out tires, and poor weather are being blamed for a weekend single-car crash that killed a 28 year-old driver and injured her passenger.

According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, Desteny R. Lancaster’s car crashed into a utility pole near the corner of St. James Avenue and Amber Street shortly before 5:30 Saturday morning. Lancaster, who lived on St. James Avenue, was trapped inside the vehicle, and was determined to be dead at the site of the crash. Her passenger, a 28 year-old man, was taken to the hospital, and was in stable condition as of Monday morning.

The roads were icy and snowy at the time of the accident, and Delaney says that investigators believe this, along with the fact that Lancaster was driving fast and had bald tires, caused the accident. The crash remains under investigation, however.
