SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. (AP) — State troopers say a man trying to save his suburban New York auto body shop from catching fire has died from burns and smoke inhalation.

The Journal News reports Saturday James O’Connor got trapped inside a Volkswagen Golf as he attempted to push the burning vehicle away from the business.

State police spokeswoman Melissa McMorris tells the paper the 48-year-old first tried to put the engine fire out Friday night with a fire extinguisher but wasn’t successful.

That’s when Investigator Joseph Bacerra says the Brookfield, Connecticut man tried to push the car from the driver’s side away from the building, sideswiped a parked car and was pinned inside.

The paper says the married father of four will be remembered at a funeral on Monday.
