Richard Gere, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Dev Patel
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Time goes by so quickly for Richard Gere. 35 years after steaming up the screen as “American Gigolo”
Gere’s still wowing the women as the newest retiree at “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. But for all of his dashing charisma, the arrival of the new guest can do little to revive this tired sequel.
As the title reminds us, this is truly a second best sequel. The familiar characters do little more than only suggest how charming they were the first time around. You get the impression Gere ended up in this retirement community by mistake.
I’m afraid the overly exuberant hotel owner Dev Patel lays on the enthusiasm a bit too thick. As the writers expanded his role, they reduced the importance of those bickering icons, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. They’re merely a shadow of what they were in the original. Dench and the others ought to move to another hotel in protest against their skimpy roles lacking warmth and humor.
“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is lacking in most everything that made the original such wonderful entertainment. Going downhill from the original 4 stars to a measly 2 stars. The disappointing Marigold hotel should be condemned for becoming too stale, too soon.
