NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Narcan counters the effects of a Heroin overdose. It saves lives. Now, you can get it at three area pharmacies.
The Walgreens, in Northampton, Florence, and Greenfield are now carrying Narcan. They partnered with the Northwestern District Attorney’s office to make the drug available. It’s about $45 for a two dose kit and you can get it without a prescription.
Narcan counters the effects of a opiod overdose. The Northampton Fire Department has carried Narcan since 2006.
“Narcan can be administered in a number of different ways, typically we see it administered nasally. Our paramedics can also start IVs on individuals,” said Deputy Chief Christopher Norris.
The fire department said their use of the drug has double over the last calendar year. It’s an epidemic that District Attorney David Sullivan is trying to stop.
“It’s the gateway to heroin addiction. 81% of first time heroin user got hooked on prescription pain pills. That’s the prevention side of it. The intervention is really to get people into treatment. They need to make sure that they give them not only encouragement, but that they are willing to employ them and give housing for people who are in recovery,” said Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan.
Drug take back days have collected 20,000 pounds of unwanted or expired medication that can get into the wrong hands. The DA’s office used money confiscated from drug convictions to train 70 people across 47 communities on the use of Narcan.
The D.A. says they’re working to expand the availability of Narcan to more pharmacies. Tapestry Health also carries Narcan. The D.A. says they potentially saved 400 lives over the last year.
