Recommended Dose of Chocolate
200 Milligrams of Flavanols to Gain Health Benefits
1 3/4 tbsp cocoa powder (20 calories)
1.5 oz. semi sweet chips (200 calories)
1 cup chocolate syrup (800 calories)
10 oz. Milk Chocolate (1,580 calories)
Chocolate contains compounds called flavanols that can keep your arteries flexible so your heart does not have to work too hard to pump out blood. They MAY also lower your blood pressure and improve brain function. The problem is the more chocolate people eat, the more weight they gain – negating the benefits.
According to the European Food Safety Authority, you need 200 milligrams of flavanols to get the health benefits. Here is a list of how much you need to eat to get the 200 milligrams from different types of chocolate
Your best source is cocoa powder. Just 1 and 3/4 tablespoons meets your need for just 20 calories. You can eat 1 and a half ounces of semi sweet chocolate chips for 200 calories. Beyond that the calories really start to rise. You’ll get the recommended flavonols in 2 ounces of dark chocolate, 1 cup of chocolate syrup and 10 and a half ounces of milk chocolate which is the highest calorie at one thousand five hundred and eighty. Hardly a health food
So try blending the cocoa powder to yogurt, warm milk, coffee, or oatmeal to get your chocolate fix and the health benefits for the fewest calories.
