Stores are stocking up on spring merchandise, despite the snow outside

Last year, Rocky's Ace Hardware was selling leaf rakes, not roof rakes.

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – On March 1, snow fell across western Massachusetts, but inside hardware stores, shelves were stocked with spring merchandise. Any delicate signs of spring were quickly blanketed by snowflakes that ushered in the start of March. The days, the weeks and the months of snow have made some people wonder if we’ll ever have a spring.

“No,” replied Gary Stone of West Springfield, when asked if he had seen any signs of spring. He was asked where he thinks spring is hiding. “I don’t know I don’t know. It’s usually getting close like St. Paddy’s Day, but it don’t look good this year,” Stone told 22News.

With more snow in the forecast, hardware stores like Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam, are still offering the winter essentials. Grills and lawn products set up in the center of the showroom offered some hope spring is within reach.

Last year at this same time, Rocky’s Ace Hardware was selling lots of bags of lawn food and leaf rakes, but this year, they’re still selling lots of bags of ice melt and roof rakes. Stores don’t want to buy too much winter merchandise in bulk: in a few weeks, they won’t be able to sell it all.

“This time of the year, most of your manufacturers, oh, probably two months ago, stopped making roof rakes and they started making rakes and shovels and summertime goods, springtime goods, to be in supply for the demand that comes in the Spring,” said Bruce Drewniany, the store manager of the Rocky’s Ace Hardware in Agawam.

While snow is common in March, the late winter month does have more fluctuation in temperatures. Instead of consecutive days of bitter cold, we will notice some warmer days, and if we close our eyes, we just might remember what the green grass looks like under all that snow.
