EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – East Longmeadow took a big step in opening up the conversation about the prescription drug epidemic.
More than one hundred parents filled three rooms in the Birchland Park Middle School for a “Youth Safety Night.”
The Police, The District Attorney and Health professionals led discussions on safeguarding prescription drugs in the home, and the scope of the opioid crisis which former governor Deval Patrick described as a public Health Emergency.
“I think it’s something that every community is dealing with. And I really think that we really need to start talking about the seriousness of this drug epidemic,” said counselor Diana Gomes.
The purpose of Wednesday night’s meeting and discussion was to raise awareness about substance abuse and drug addiction, and to help parents start a constructive conversation with their children about the realities and dangers of opioids.
