LOS ANGELES, Calif. (MEDIA GENERAL) – Giuliana Rancic, co-host of E!’s Fashion Police, is offering up an apology on television and on social media after she made comments about a Disney star’s hair on Oscars night. Meanwhile, Rancic’s co-host, Kelly Osbourne, has taken to Twitter to express her outrage over Rancic’s words.
On Monday’s edition of Fashion Police following the Oscars, Rancic was commenting on Zendaya’s look. Zendaya is a Disney star and former Dancing with the Stars contestant. Rancic commented on her hair done in locs. Rancic said, “I feel that she smells like patchouli oil… or weed.”
The comment unleashed an uproar. Zendaya posted a lengthy statement on Twitter and Instagram in part saying, “To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive.” She went on to say, “There is already harsh criticism of African American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair…. To me locs are a symbol of strength and beauty, almost like a lion’s mane.”

Rancic issued an online apology. Posting on Twitter, “I’m sorry I offended you and others. I was referring to a bohemian chic look. Had NOTHING to do with race and NEVER would.”

She said, “I do understand that something I said last night did cross the line.” She said the issue was weighing heavily on her heart. “This really has been a learning experience for me. This incident has taught me to be a lot more aware of clichés and stereotypes and how much damage they can do and I am responsible, as we all are, for not perpetuating them further,” Rancic said.
Rancic’s co-host at Fashion Police, Kelly Osbourne, has also taken to Twitter. Osbourne said she is Zendaya’s friend. She also said she was questioning if she should leave the show after the comments.
