BOISE, Idaho (KTVB) An Idaho lawmaker whose comments about female anatomy during the hearing for an abortion bill went viral Monday is defending himself.
Representative Vito Barbieri says he wasn’t being serious when he asked a doctor whether a woman could swallow a small camera for a gynecological exam.
Dr. Julie Madsen, who was testifying in opposition to the bill, replied that would be anatomically impossible because swallowed pills do not end up in the vagina.
“Fascinating,” Barbieri replied, “That makes sense.”
Reached by phone Monday night, Barbieri insisted the question was a rhetorical one, aimed at highlighting the difference between a chemical abortion and another procedure, such as a colonoscopy.
