SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An Italian market in downtown Springfield best known for its homemade Italian ice will soon close.
With the casino on the way and in an older building that’s well past its prime, the owners of Albano’s Market have decided it’s about time to pack it in.
It will be the end of an era. Albano’s Market on East Columbus Ave in downtown Springfield has been in business for more than 100 years but will soon close for good.
“Probably close in 3 or 4 weeks, Albano’s will say it’s the end and goodbye,” said co-owner John Bruschi.
The Albano family bought the business in from the original owners 1942. Bruschi said it wasn’t an easy decision but with the casino on the way and the family and the building getting older, they realized it’s time.
“There will be a lot of broken hearts, a lot of tears, including me, but it comes to an end you know,” Bruschi said.
Albano’s is best known for their homemade Italian Ice in the summer. Customers who got them as kids, say they looked forward to the tradition still even as an adult.
“The Italian ice, it’s the last place it’s made, here in Springfield. There have been others who have tried, imitators, but nothing beats the original,” said Springfield’s Fred Basile.
Bruschi, his wife and sister-in-law say their loyal customers have kept them going all these years and they hope to see them all again before they close for good.
The I-Team put in calls to the buyers but we haven’t heard back yet. We’ll follow-up when we know what that property will be used for.
As for Albano’s Market, no “official” last day has been set.
