SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Students at a Springfield school damaged by the June 2011 tornado had their first day at a brand new facility.
This is a look at the new Brookings Elementary School. It’s $27.5 million facility located on Walnut Street.
The original school was destroyed four years ago, and since, students had been forced to learn in modular classrooms.
Springfield’s Superintendent of Schools says it’s a huge step forward for the city. Daniel Warwick told 22News, “We have the Brookings building completely redone after the tornado, and again, I just can’t thank the mayor enough for supporting all these projects. Now, we have 21st century buildings for our kids.”
The Massachusetts School Building Authority funded the entire project.
