HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – “I’ve never had an electric bill that high in the 41 years I’ve lived in my house,” said Edna Bresnahan of Easthampton. Bresnahan, like many Eversource Energy customers, saw a noticeable increase in her electric bill this month.
The supply rate increased from 8 cents to more than 14 cents per kilowatt hour. That’s about a 60% increase when they were told it would only go 30% higher.
“It’s very detrimental to the budget because if it’s gone up like this this month, what’s it going to be next month or the month after, it’s kind of like a steam-rolling situation here,” Bresnahan added.
Edna wasn’t the only person to contact the I-Team on this issue, we had a number of complaints come in so we printed your e-mails and brought them to the electric company to get some answers.
(Most of the people who’ve gotten in touch with us think their bill has gone up. Where are you getting the 29%?) “29 is the delivery side, which has stayed almost the same throughout the years, and the supply side blended, the supply side jumped, they’re right, over 60% so that blending is about the 29% we were talking about,” Eversource Energy spokeswoman Priscilla Ress said.
Ress said the delivery portion of your bill stayed the same, that’s the side with all the fees and charges outside of your usage. The supply side went up about 60%, but when the bill is combined, your total bill increases around 29% or about $30 for an average household.
Ress added that it’s also important to note your usage may have increased in the winter months and there are programs available to help you save money.
