WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A Westfield family will not be able to go home for the time being, following a fire that started in an SUV parked in their garage.
Westfield Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Kane told 22News that there was heavy smoke coming from the home at 125 Feeding Hills Road (Route 187) when firefighters got there around 12:15 Thursday afternoon.
Kane said that the fire, which started in the engine compartment of a 2015 Ford Explorer, remained contained to the garage in which the SUV was parked. But he added that there was heavy smoke and heat damage to the house.
Because the driveway to the home is so steep, firefighters had to park their trucks in the street and run their hoses up the hill. As a result, the roadway was blocked for a time between Pontoosic Road and the Agawam town line.
Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office have been called in to help determine what caused the fire to start.
