(CNN) – A North Carolina man says he woke up with his mentally ill son standing over him, threatening to set him on fire. What happened next nearly cost the son his life.
The 78 year old man told me he and his wife felt like prisoners in their own home, this house on Lewis Mill road. Their bipolar and schizophrenic son Ralph Gregory Wilson lived with them.
The elderly man said Tuesday night his son put him in an impossible position, which you can hear in his call to police. He woke to find his son standing over him and his wife. Their bed was doused with a flammable liquid.
The father grabbed a gun he kept near the bed and fired a warning shot into the wall, but he said his son didn’t back down. He said he fired a shot into his son’s chest barely missing his heart. The injury was not life threatening. The son ran outside and went to a neighbor’s house for help.
Police told us it is an unusual case on so many levels. They said at this point it appears to be a case of self defense. Police say it will take another couple of days to complete their investigation. The district attorney has yet to decide if charges should be filed.
