Train Crash Leaves Six Dead
Commuter train collides with car on the tracks near Valhalla, New York.

VALHALLA, N.Y. (NBC News) At least six people are dead and 12 others injured after a New York City commuter train struck an SUV at a rail crossing north of New York City Tuesday.

The crowded commuter train erupted into flames after striking the SUV at a railroad crossing in Valhalla.

Two of those killed were in the vehicle.

“It was a horrific scene,” said train passenger Jamey Wallace. “We were smelling the fumes from the car. We said we need to get out, the fire was starting to spread to the second train.”

Hundreds of passengers evacuated the train and were taken to a local gym for shelter.

Witnesses say the railroad crossing gates came down on top of the SUV, which was stopped on the tracks.
