SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Civil rights legend, Georgia Congressman John Lewis is coming to Springfield to deliver the Elms College commencement speech in May.

Students at Springfield’s Renaissance Magnet School expressed a desire to meet Congressman Lewis. The kids saw the movie “Selma” this week, which depicts the brutality Lewis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and others endured during the voting rights march of 1965.

Adia Samba, a 7th grade, said, “Just to meet someone who was able to speak with Dr. King who knew his story, his triumphs, the defeat he’d gone through.”

Daniel Reyes, a senior at Renaissance Magnet School, would like to ask, “How did you get the strength to be able to do this because it takes a lot of pride, not just one march, but a movement?”

During Black History Month, Renaissance School students will see a series of movies that deal with the African-American experience.
