Police: Head lice remedy deadly for Springfield child

Girl suffocated on plastic bag that was on her head

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A small child died after suffocating on a plastic bag that was used along with mayonnaise as a home remedy for head lice, Springfield police say.

Police Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that the girl, who was about one and a half years old, was discovered by police after they were called to Cass Street around 3:00 Saturday afternoon on a report of an infant not breathing.

Delaney said that mayonnaise was put into the girl’s hair, and a plastic bag was put over her that, in an apparent effort to kill head lice. When the girl went to sleep, he says that the bag had slipped over her face.

No arrests have yet been made, and few details are being released, including the girl’s name. Springfield police detectives are currently looking into the matter, and the Department of Children and Families has been notified.
