1,000 tickets written for unshoveled sidewalks

They issue about 500 tickets in a typical season

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A series of storms has made quite a mess throughout western Massachusetts, and with all the snow, many people have not been cleaning it up like they should. With many sidewalks remaining snow clogged, Springfield police are writing more tickets than ever in an effort to get everything cleared.

The Springfield Police Ordinance Squad has given out 1,000 $50 tickets over the past two weeks. To give you an idea of how many that is, Officer Mark Kenney told 22News that they would typically give out about 500 over the course of an average season.

He said that the violators range from homeowners to commercial property owners. Kenney said he’s targeting property owners who seem to ignore their responsibilities.

Another problem has been the large number of people violating the city’s parking ban. This has brought safety concerns, as the fire department has complained that some streets remain too narrow for them to get through.
