Snow banks responsible to broken bumpers

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The biggest reason people are coming into auto body shops this winter is because of fender benders from skidding into snowbanks.

Liebenow Auto Body in Greenfield told 22News that it’s because most bumpers are made out of plastic. In the winter months those bumpers become brittle and are more likely to crack and break if you hit something; bumpers have more flexibility in warmer temperatures.

Linda Liebenow, the manager, explained that they’ve had two or three bumper repairs a day since last week’s storm. “People just lose control of their cars and it’s not really their fault. Those snow banks are so big and a lot of ice underneath. It just freezes up, hit the bumpers, and the bumpers are gone.”

If you need to take your car to get repairs, Liebenow recommends wiping off the car. You’ll be able to get your repairs done a bit faster if auto body shops don’t have to work around any sand and mud. Experts also advise not to wash your car before taking it to the shop so the doors and trunk don’t freeze.
