Refugee education to be discussed in West Springfield

The meeting takes place Wednesday at noon

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – West Springfield Mayor Ed Sullivan will be meeting with federal officials Wednesday about a refugee program in the city.

Currently, there are about 335 refugee children receiving an education in West Springfield Public schools. Their education comes at a price, covered by tax payers.

Sullivan says, “It costs us, just in the school department, not including other health issues, it’s costs us $500,000 a year. So there’s a significant impact on our tax dollars and our budget.”

That’s why Mayor Sullivan looks forward to the meeting to discuss the impacts of the program on the city.

The meeting takes place Wednesday at noon at Coburn Elementary school. 22News will be there and will bring you an update on 22News at 5.
