SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WWLP-The Westfield News) – A 45 year-old Southwick resident has been identified as the snowmobiler who died in an accident on the Congamond lakes over the weekend.

Southwick Fire Chief Richard Anderson told our media partner, The Westfield News, that Wayne Szczpanik had apparently crashed into the wall of the tunnel that runs between the Middle and South Ponds while trying to hydroplane in open water. His friends and emergency personnel tried to revive him, and he was taken to Noble Hospital, where he died.

The tunnel between the ponds, which runs underneath Congamond Rd. (Route 168) does not freeze up like the surrounding waters, and snowmobilers often hydroplane through it.
