Five men accused of gang rape in West Springfield

The alleged rape happened on January 15th

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Five men from Chicopee were arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges connected to the alleged gang rape of a woman inside a West Springfield hotel.

Springfield District Court Judge Robert Murphy took at least a half an hour to go over the police report before deciding on a wide range of bail for the five defendants. The alleged incident took place on January 15th. The defendants were arrested earlier Wednesday.

Judge Murphy ordered Raul Ramos and Fernando Ramos held on $25,000 cash bail; 19-year-old’s Joseph Lopez and Geovanny Gutierrez are held on $10,000 cash bail; and 19-year-old Tyler Gibson is held on $5,000 cash bail.

One of the defense attorneys said earlier Wednesday there could be a 6th defendant in that alleged gang rape case.

They are accused of repeatedly raping a 20-year-old woman, but they denied the rape charges. Assistant District Attorney Victoria Lauro Wright told the judge what was supposed to be a small party in a hotel room turned into a nightmare for the victim.

The defense attorneys said the victim and some of the defendants knew one another from high school.

ADA Lauro Wright gave a very emotional testimony on behalf of the victim. “Snuck to the bathroom, got herself dressed and left. She called her friend when she left. She broke down in tears hysterically, and went to Holyoke Hospital for a rape kit.”

Another hearing will be held on February 19th. 22News will continue to cover this story and will bring you the latest information when it becomes available.
