NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Hampshire County residents came together to ask the question: “Could Ferguson happen here?” In other words, could demonstrations here in Western Massachusetts result in violence?
A panel at Edwards Church in Northampton addressed this question. They said Western Massachusetts activists continue to fight for the rights and lives of black men and women, but they said it should all be done in a peaceful way.
Northampton’s police chief and the Northwestern District Attorney were on Monday’s panel.
Panelist Vanessa Lynch Zorlu told 22News, “It’s important to have this conversation on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. “Reclaiming MLK day is reclaiming the much broader black power movement and also the struggle for black liberation today. I think the movement is just going to continue to grow and I think it’s a really beautiful thing.”
Zorlu agrees this movement should be done in a peaceful way. She said she looks forward to working with other city leaders to make this happen.
