Raynham recovery advocate to attend SOTU

Joanne Peterson founded recovery organization "Learn to Cope"

BOSTON (SHNS) – Recovery advocate Joanne Peterson of Raynham will accompany Sen. Edward Markey to President Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Peterson founded Learn to Cope, an organization with 16 chapters in Massachusetts that provides support and education to individuals whose family members are struggling with addiction to opiates and other drugs.

According to Markey’s office, there are 65,000 people in Massachusetts who are dependent on opiates, with 50,000 of those people needing treatment but not currently receiving it.

In a statement, Markey credited Learn to Cope with saving lives and bringing hope to families and called Peterson, who was born in Stoughton, “a shining example of compassion, strength and fearlessness for all who are struggling with addiction and recovery.”
