Icy road conditions slowing drivers

icy crashes
At least six people died in a series of crashes on icy roads in Minnesota over the weekend.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)– The morning after a storm brought freezing rain to western Massachusetts, drivers have been forced to deal with icy roads Monday morning.  Road conditions were tricky as some areas were okay to drive on and others were very icy, based on where the roads had been treated and where they had not been.

Drivers need to use extra caution getting on and off the highways, and on bridges and overpasses, as those areas tend to freeze first.  The highways themselves were in better shape, however, than some secondary roads and side streets.

Some folks throughout western Massachusetts have also woken up to a layer of ice on their windshield they needed to scrape off.

Even though air temperatures in many areas were above freezing Monday, 22News Storm Team Meteorologist Nick Bannin explained that some roads were still colder than the air, causing icy patches.

Many sidewalks were also covered in a thick layer of ice left over from Sunday’s rain.
