Ex-Brimfield treasurer pleaded guilty to embezzlement

Kirsten Weldon resigned in 2013 after financial audit

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Brimfield’s former treasurer has pleaded guilty to embezzling about $80,000 from the town.

Kirsten Weldon pleaded guilty Monday in Hampden County Superior Court to one count of embezzlement by a public official.

Sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 27.

The 44-year-old Weldon abruptly resigned in April 2013 during an audit of town accounts.

Weldon, first elected in 2003, was charged with stealing the money from 2006 until early 2013, often by accepting cash payments that were never deposited into town bank accounts

Her lawyer says she put her family on the town’s health insurance policy but did not make the appropriate contributions.
