Grafton couple charged in baby’s injuries

The baby is now in state custody

WESTBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — A Grafton husband and wife are being held on $5,000 bail each, accused of injuring their infant daughter.

Julie and Andrew Pirrotta are charged with reckless endangerment of a child and permitting substantial injury to a child.

But a lawyer for Julie Pirrotta said in court at their arraignment last week that police should have waited for additional medical testing before arresting the couple because the child likely suffers from rickets, a medical condition that makes her more susceptible to broken bones.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that the then 4-week-old baby was taken to the hospital late last year suffered from numerous fractured ribs and internal bleeding.

The baby is now in state custody.
