8-10 years in prison for man convicted of hatchet attack

Michael Lebert was sentenced for September 2012 attack at Dugout Cafe

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The man convicted of attacking an employee at a Chicopee bar and restaurant with a hatchet has been sentenced to eight to ten years in prison.

Michael Lebert was sentenced by Judge John Ferrara on Thursday at Hampden Superior Court in Springfield. Lebert was convicted following his trial last month for the September 2012 incident outside the Dugout Café on Grattan Street.

During the attack, the 57 year-old woman was hit in the head with the blunt side of the weapon. She lost a large amount of blood in the attack, and was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where she made her recovery.

Lebert had elected to represent himself in the case, but midway through the trial, Attorney Terrence Dunphy began representing Lebert.
