SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Western New England Golden Gloves championships were back in western Massachusetts Friday night at the MassMutual Center. The tournament kicked off at 7:00 p.m.
It’s all a spin off from the Western Massachusetts Golden Gloves, a boxing program in Holyoke for at-risk youth, providing them with an alternative to the streets. The program eventually merged with Connecticut’s program, becoming the Western New England Golden Gloves.
“It’s a very serious competition. Most of these guys have been training for months, maybe even years,” said Harsh Trivedi of Westfield. “I mean you fight at golden gloves you’re doing something right to get yourself here. These dudes are serious, and they fight, fight to win.”
