PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) A Florida man and his 7-month-old nephew are dead after a family picnic turned into tragedy along the Withlacoochee River Sunday evening.
Investigators say 46-year-old Jeffery Stock was sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck when the vehicle rolled into the river. Stock was holding his nephew at the time and tried to jump out of harms way. Instead, the truck ran over him and dragged him and the baby into the water.
Deputy David Roque was one of the many divers in the river. While rescue workers were hopeful they would find the baby alive, the conditions were less than ideal.
“It’s pretty hard, especially when you have kids yourself. Just try to concentrate on helping the family and trying to get closure for them,” Roque said.
