Suspect arrested for bomb threat to police station

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – A man who allegedly made a bomb threat toward the Amherst police station has been arrested. Amherst Police Lt. William Menard notified 22News that George Checkal, 34, of Amherst was caught by police Wednesday evening.

According to Menard, the threat came in the form of an e-mail that was sent to all Amherst police officers on Tuesday evening. The e-mail also was sent to several random addresses not connected with the Amherst police. No sign of a bomb was found inside the building.

Checkal, who lists his address as “the streets of Amherst” is being charged with making a false bomb threat. He was held Wednesday and Thursday at the Hampshire County House of Correction in Northampton on $5,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned Friday at Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown.
