Winter weather safety tips

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) — You may have noticed the grounds are covered with snow Sunday morning

It’s not too messy, but a little bit of snow can sometimes create slippery conditions.

Sunday night marks the first day of winter which means a few months of icy roads, snow storms, and freezing weather conditions.

To stay safe this winter, it can be helpful to warm up your car 10 to 15 minutes before leaving the house.

AAA wants to remind drivers to never warm up a car in a garage, or any other enclosed areas.

They also recommend making sure your tires are properly inflated and not mixing radial tires with regular tires.

Parking breaks can freeze, so if possible, stay away from using your parking brake in cold, rainy, and snowy weather.

If you’re parking break does free, releasing and setting the brake can help dislodge any ice that could be stuck in the brake system. warns drivers if it’s snowing lightly and getting colder outside, moister will stay on the roads and could turn to ice.

You can check whether temperatures will fall before leaving the house on the 22News storm team weather app.
