(NBC News) – The nation is experiencing a surge in flu cases.
One year ago this week flu was widespread in just four states. This year 29 states show rampant cases. 1,700 people nationwide have been hospitalized, mostly people over age 65 and those with underlying conditions like asthma.
This year one of the main flu virus strains mutated, making the vaccine less effective. Still, infectious disease experts say it’s worth getting the shot.
Two prescription drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, can help ease symptoms of the flu. Tamiflu’s manufacturer says there is ample supply of the drug even though some areas of the country have reported shortages.
