TSA reports an increase in gun seizures

A record 2,000 firearms have been found

Transportation Security Administration officials note a recent spike in guns and other potential weapons found in carry-on baggage.

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) As crowds pack the airports to try to get home in time for the holidays, Transportation Security Administration agents across the country are finding weapons at an alarming rate.

So far this year, a record 2,000 firearms have been found at airport security checkpoints across the nation.

TSA spokesperson Nico Melendez says they have seen a massive jump in the amount of firearms they’ve uncovered at airport checkpoints over the last decade.

“In 2003-2004 we averaged two gun finds a day,” said Melendez. “Now we’re up to 6.5 guns everyday that we’re finding.”
