SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Traffic is going to get worse before it gets better. The Springfield Sewer and Water Commission notified 22News that State Street from Dwight Street to Main Street will be closed on Friday and Saturday.
From 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., crews will be milling and paving the road. Until then, State Street is open to one lane of traffic in each direction.
It’s causing some delays, but people said they’re glad they can still get around downtown. Sean King of Springfield said, “They blocked it off so you know people had to like if they were on a bus trying to get to their destination, they made sure that they had a spot to get through and get to their spot on time so they wouldn’t be late or anything. Hopefully something happens, hope something comes around and everything goes well.”
Earlier Tuesday, 22News got a closer look of the hole on State Street between Dwight and Main Street. It was caused by flooding and water pressure from a water main break on nearby Willow Street on Monday.
Springfield Water and Sewer Commissioner Joyce Mulvaney said repairs on the water main are complete, but utility companies are still looking into whether the break caused damage to telephone and electric lines. They’ll make repairs before the work on the road starts.
