Holiday travelers expected to be most since 2009

90 million Americans plan on taking a road trip

FLORENCE, Mass. (WWLP) – If you’re celebrating lower gas prices by traveling this holiday season, you’re not alone.

According to AAA, nearly 90 million Americans plan on taking a road trip to their holiday destination. More than 6 million travelers are taking advantage of a 7-percent decrease in airfare by flying this holiday season.

However, many Hampshire County residents told 22News they plan on staying warm and cozy at home.

Denis Kitchen of Shutesbury said, “Gas is cheaper than it has been in a long time. I think that’s the primary reason, a sense of optimism.”

John Mcgorath, Florence said, “My family’s here in town, my daughter, my wife, so there’s no need to leave Hampshire county.”

Lower prices aren’t the only reason why AAA expects the largest numbers of travelers since 2009. This year, the New Year lands on a Thursday, offering travelers an extra day to fit holiday travel into their plans.

AAA expects more than a million drivers to call them for help this holiday season.
