Employee put out fire at Hadley Stop & Shop

Fire is now out, store expected to re-open this afternoon

HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Customers and workers were evacuated from the Hadley Stop & Shop supermarket due to a small fire that started shortly before noontime Tuesday.

Hadley Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel told 22News that their department was called to the store at around 11:30 for a report of an electrical fire in the dairy section. Amherst firefighters were also called-in as backup, but by the time both fire departments got there, an employee had already put the fire out with an extinguisher.

No injuries were reported.

More than a dozen employees were told to stay outside for about a half an hour, and customers were still outside the Route 9 store at around 12:30. They were told that as soon as the electrical inspectors and the board of health confirms the fire was isolated, they will be allowed back inside.
