BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Senior living facilities currently aren’t allowed to obtain a liquor licenses, but that could soon change.

Retirement home residents may soon be able to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner.

It’s against the law now, but a bill that’s moving through the State House hopes to give cities the ability to grant liquor licenses to senior living facilities.

The state lawmaker sponsoring the bill compares some of these dining rooms to five-star restaurants. The difference being, it’s illegal for retirement facilities to serve liquor and wine.

Holyoke Democrat Aaron Vega believes people in their golden years should have the option to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. “I also think it’s safe. They’re not going to be driving anywhere. They’re going to be having their dinner, having their glass of wine, and going right to their room.”

State lawmakers have until the end of the month to get the bill to the governor’s desk to have him sign it into law.
