BOSTON (AP) — Gov.-elect Charlie Baker has named Ron Walker, founder of the Boston-bank merchant bank Next Street, to serve as Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development in the incoming administration.
Baker announced his latest cabinet appointment on Friday, touting Walker’s experience in helping small businesses and promoting economic development in urban areas.
Walker said he shared the governor-elect’s focus on workforce development and education.
Walker was an executive at Sovereign Bank before forming Next Street, and also serves as chairman of the board of THE BASE, an organization that provides mentoring for black and Latino athletes in urban neighborhoods.
Baker, a Republican, takes office on Jan. 8.
