SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Two Springfield schools were honored Thursday night for their fight against asthma.
The American Lung Association teamed up with the Pioneer Valley Asthma Coalition to recognize schools that create healthy, “asthma friendly” environments for students. Indian Orchard Elementary and Kensington Internation Schools received special awards.
Sarita Hudson of the Pioneer Valley Asthma Coalition told 22News, “It’s so epidemic it’s so widespread here and there are great disparities for the African American and Latino communities, who tend to have more hospitalizations and ER visits.”
Asthma in Springfield has one of the highest rates in Massachusetts. The Pioneer Valley Asthma coalition says close to 20% of Springfield residents suffer from the illness. Massachusetts as a whole is just around 11%.
