Owners turn in dog, charged with animal cruelty

The dog is expected to need special care

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Animal cruelty charges have been filed against the owners of a 5-month-old pit-bull puppy that suffered broken bones and serious head injuries.

MSPCA Law Enforcement Officer Christine Allenberg told 22News two adults and a juvenile from West Springfield were charged after the puppy was surrendered to TJO. A joint investigation by the MSPCA and West Springfield Animal Control determined that the people who turned in the dog were in fact the dog’s owners.

Allenberg said the dog had suffered “systematic” abuse, including multiple broken bones, contusions and serious head trauma.  The dog is expected to survive but will likely need special care.

The puppy’s owners will be arraigned in Springfield District Court on December 22nd.
