While they were there investigating, the suspect allegedly returned to the store but ran off before he could be caught.

Chicopee Police later determined the same suspect passed a fake $10 bill at the Payless Shoe Store on Memorial Drive on Monday.  The suspect was then identified as William Shields, 43, of Chicopee.

Detectives tracked Shields to the Econo Lodge on Burnett Road where he lives. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with four counts of uttering a counterfeit note, a felony. At the time of his arrest, Chicopee Police say Shields was also found with more of the same counterfeit $10 bills.
