AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) Students at the University of Texas at Austin will have the opportunity to take a unique course featuring the queen of pop this spring.
Professor Omise’eke Natasha Tinsley joined UT Austin in 2012. She says one of the first things she saw was the amount of interest in women of color issues, as well as the need to have spaces to talk about experiences, hopes and goals.
She found herself turning to videos by Beyonce and Rihanna to explain the academic reading material and open up wider conversations.
“One of the things I learned a long time ago from my own teachers,” Tinsley says, “is the most important thing is to teach students for life.”
She’s now figured out a way to reach students on a whole new level.
Come Spring, students can take the Beyonce Feminism and Rihanna Womanism course. The 85-student class size is already full, with a wait list.
“What I’m interested in is how the language of their songs, the language that they use in the media, open space for women to talk about issues that relate to their own lives,” Professor Tinsley explains.
