WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Electronics are popular purchases on Black Friday, but it’s going to cost you more to use them this year. The area’s two largest utility companies, National Grid and WMECo have increased their supply rates for electric customers.
But there are ways you can save. Look for the electronics that say “Energy Star” on them.
Televisions, computers, laptops, washing machines, and refrigerators are some of the electronic items with this option.
Northeast IT Systems Engineer Chris Bovino said that you can also go to your computer “systems preferences” and select how energy efficient you want your computer to run.
“Even if it’s turned off, it’s still plugged in. Therefore it’s still taking power, so there are settings inside Energy Star products that make it so it doesn’t actually take the power from the source,” Bovino said.
It’s also advised that you unplug electronic devices when they’re not being used.
You can look on manufacturers’ websites to find out just how much energy you can save by buying Energy Star electronics.
