Springfield activist Ruth Loving dies at 100

The Matriarch of Springfield Civil Rights died Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts Civil Rights legend Ruth Loving has died.  She was 100 years old.

Ruth Loving was known as the “Matriarch of the civil rights movement in Springfield.”

Henderson’s Funeral Home in Springfield confirmed for 22News Wednesday that Ruth Loving died Tuesday.  The family has not yet finalized funeral arrangements.

A long-time civil rights activist dating back to the 1950’s, Ruth Loving even worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Loving helped organize and attended every Black History Month observance in Springfield since 1986.

Ruth Loving was instrumental in the re-opening of the Mason Square Neighborhood library branch in Springfield.
